Millwork gives paint edges, shadow lines and repetition. That makes it one of the strongest places to use color. The design decision and the coating system must be considered together so the result is both beautiful and serviceable.
Choose the visual role
Color-matched walls and cabinetry create an enveloping, furniture-like effect. Contrasting cabinetry makes storage a focal object. A darker shiplap wall can visually anchor lighter counters and open shelving.
Review the color with countertops, backsplash, flooring and metal finishes—the permanent materials set the undertone boundaries.
Prepare for handling
Cabinet doors and trim collect hand oils and cleaning residue. Degrease carefully, sand glossy surfaces to a uniform dullness, remove dust and prime for adhesion before applying a leveling enamel.

Balance sheen
A lower-sheen wall beside satin or semi-gloss millwork creates subtle depth even when both use the same color. In strong daylight, the sheen contrast will be more noticeable.
